data-mm-id=”_cydceu3hc”>If sports come back, they'll come back with understanding that they'll continue in the wake of additional players testing positive for COVID-19. There doesn't seem to be a way around it, even if this initial wave slows. One hopes monetary pressures don't cloud judgement and force athletes back onto their playing surfaces before things are adequately safe. But who knows what the future holds — and perhaps more importantly — who can be a part of it. ESPN Sources: Attendees left Board of Governors call w/ Adam Silver today feeling positive about momentum toward an NBA return to play this season. Discussion included how league/players will need to get comfortable w/ some positive tests for virus not shutting down a resumption— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) May 13, 2020Immunocompromised players will have to think long and hard about the risks before they sign up to play again. Players with families will do their own calculus. Part of me fears that we're speeding to an unpleasant time when those who make tough, intensely personal choices will be vilified by a rightfully bored but shortsighted public desperate for distraction. The most pressing question to me — and one I haven't heard discussed all that often — is age of the coaches charged with leading these teams. What, exactly, do things look like for them?Even in our extremely fractured times, we can all agree the pandemic poses more of a risk for those over 50 than those half that age. Therefore, a reasonable argument can be made that healthy players aren't in relative danger if they contract it. The same can't be said for the guy with the suit and clipboard.Consider the ages of these NBA coaches:Jim Boylen, 55Rick Carlisle, 60Dwane Casey, 63Steve Kerr, 54Mike D'Antoni, 69Nate McMillan, 55Doc Rivers, 58Alvin Gentry, 65Billy Donovan, 54Steve Clifford, 58Brett Brown, 59Terry Stotts, 62Gregg Popovich, 71Scott Brooks, 54Quin Snyder, 53Nick Nurse, 52And these NFL coaches:John Harbaugh, 57Mike McCarthy, 56Vic Fangio, 61Frank Reich, 58Doug Marrone, 55Andy Reid, 62Jon Gruden, 56Anthony Lynn, 51Mike Zimmer, 63Bill Belichick, 68Sean Payton, 56* (Payton already had COVID-19)Doug Pederson, 52Pete Carroll, 68Bruce Arians, 67Ron Rivera, 58And these MLB managers:Torey Lovullo, 54Brian Snitker, 64Bud Black, 62Don Mattingly, 59Joe Girardi, 55Mike Shildt, 51Dave Martinez, 55Ron Roenicke, 63Rick Renteria, 58Terry Francona, 61Ron Gardenhire, 62Dusty Baker, 70Joe Maddon, 66Bob Melvin, 58Scott Servais, 52Charlie Montoyo, 54In all three leagues, around half the managerial positions are filled by men north of 50. Are they all going to return to their positions if the plan is to simply fight through additional outbreaks? My gut says yes because of the nature of competition. But it definitely feels like tempting fate a bit. Even if testing is ramped up to the point where it can be done routinely, a new NYU study says 48 percent of Abbott quick-testing units registers a false negative. That's not exactly a fail-safe. Even with 95 percent accuracy, contagious players and coaches could slip through the cracks. Look, despite what some agitators would have you believe, there aren't many sportswriters out there rooting against sports coming back. No one is celebrating this time, which, what's the word here … sucks hard. The point is that there are so many threads to pull on and logistical hurdles to consider. An aging coaching ranks is certainly one of them.

Including tonight's game against the Cowboys, they finish with the second-toughest strength of schedule. If ESPN were to pull this off, it would be considered a tremendous upgrade for an NFL broadcast, but what would be the point? With Tony Romo signing a huge new deal to stay at CBS, chasing Michaels to land Manning seems like a panic move for ESPN. Michaels turns 76 this football season. While he's the perfect age and income bracket to run for president, he's getting up there in broadcaster years. That's not to say he isn't still currently great at what he does, but ESPN doesn't need him.If Manning truly wants to call football games, he'll call football games. When he makes up his mind, ESPN can be there waiting with a Rom…
data-mm-id=”_ydm1qedua”>A win at Cameron Indoor is a win at Cameron Indoor. Tom Izzo is not going to apologize for his Michigan State team flying down and taking care of business, raucous sweaty crowd or not. Nonconference road wins in Durham don't just happen with Real Housewives spinoff regularity. Duke suffered only its third such defeat since 2000 at the hands of a team that lost a bonafide legend in Cassius Winston and battle-tested Swiss Army knife in Xavier Tillman. So Izzo doesn't want to hear about any asterisk. And really, it's not as though the history books need to go through the trouble of putting a game played on the first of December in full and complete context. If anything, either this entire year deserves some sort of universal asterisk or none of it do…
data-mm-id=”_2omiheh7o”>Jimmy Butler has always wanted to be a winner. So badly, in fact, that he got himself traded out of Chicago and Minnesota, then left Philadelphia of his own accord, leaving rumors of harsh leadership and locker room issues in his wake. Butler wants to win, to be known as a winner. Yet in his career, he has struggled to become that. He's had regular season success and playoff success, but failed to get past the second round in nine seasons heading into the 2019-20 campaign. Finally, though, Butler did just that. The Miami Heat, Butler's squad through-and-through, upset the Milwaukee Bucks in five games to advance to this year's Eastern Conference Finals. There's no complaining about Butler's demanding style of leadership or any locker roo…
data-mm-id=”_cynaxl2g9″>The 2020 NFL Draft class has gotten off to a good start this season. This is especially true in regards to the young wide receivers selected in the first few rounds. Justin Jefferson, Henry Ruggs, Chase Claypool, and CeeDee Lamb have all been big contributors for their respective teams after only five weeks. And that's just to name a few. It is not every year we get to see such a variety of talented receivers succeed early and often in their NFL careers. Pat McAfee, while discussing this development on his show today, posited that the young guns are more successful than their predecessors for one key reason out of all the others: a drive to create content on the 'Gram. These young receivers are absolute studs & I do believe it's because of the…
data-mm-id=”_behoahmc0″>While trade talks in Philadelphia have centered around Carson Wentz, one of Wentz's top targets is also expected to be shipped out of town this offseason. Zach Ertz, who came to represent the Eagles as much as any other player before, during and after their Super Bowl run, is on the trade block after reportedly getting into a "heated exchange" with general manager Howie Roseman last year amidst a contract dispute. The issues carried over to the regular season where Ertz had the worst season of his career, accumulating 335 yards and scoring only once in 11 games. Ertz will make $8.5 million this year but has nothing guaranteed after that. He wants a new contract and seems ready for a change of scenery too. So where is Ertz most likely to end up? Le…

Since the New England Patriots coach is not part of the NFL Coaches Association, he is not collectively bargained into the Madden franchise like every other coach in the league. Instead, he is replaced by an avatar with a fake name. This year it's Peter Gaffney, a bald guy with glasses and a beard. The Wolverines are currently ranked No. 2 and sit at 8-0 but every day a new headline seems to make things worse. We're here to catch you up on the latest news on the scandal. For those out of the loop, the general outline is that low-level staffer Connor Stalions allegedly masterminded an elaborate scheme to steal opponents' signs. While sign-stealing in-game is allowed in college football, attending games or practices in person and doing so is against the rules. Stalions is alleged to have broken that rule numerous times. He was suspended by the university with pay on Oct. 20. Stalions is a 2017 Naval Academy…
data-mm-id=”_f48lpzjte”>It was another Aaron Rodgers Tuesday on the Pat McAfee Show and there was plenty discuss. We learned that his miraculous return to the New York Jets this season will only happen if he is medically cleared to play and if the team has a chance to make the playoffs. Considering that Gang Green is currently seeded 15th out of 16 AFC teams, it seems highly unlikely that he'll be out on that field again before next year. But hey, strange things happen and one doubts Tim Boyle at their own peril. The gang also dove into a conspiracy theory that we honestly thought was more of a joke than anything serious — the notion that Rodgers didn't really tear his Achilles as was reported. "Let me just say to anybody out there who doesn't think that I tor…
